Preceded by an intense toothache, a root canal treatment, also called an endodontic treatment, consists of “removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth.”, according to the Canadian Dental Association.
A deep cavity or a crack can let bacteria enter the tooth’s pulp and these can make their way to the root canal. The pulp gets then infected and causes an abscess, which can cause pain. Indeed, the pulp is a tissue containing not only blood vessels but also nerves.
Why a root canal treatment?
The raison d’etre of a root canal treatment is to be able to relieve pain without extracting the tooth. Indeed, extracting the tooth is a last resort: the other teeth will tend to want to fill the gap cause by the missing tooth. This can deform not only your smile but also your jaw! This is why a root canal treatment is preferable.
First, the dentist will administer a local anesthesia of the tooth. Then, a little divider will be placed around the tooth to prevent your saliva (and its bacteria) to touch the pulp.
Then, an opening will be made in the tooth, and the pulp will be removed and the canal will be widened and cleaned up. After that, the canal will be filled and sealed. Finally, the dentist will close up the tooth with a temporary or permanent capping.
At Clinique Dentaire Champlain, we will make sure you are comfortable during the whole procedure, so that you can have the best possible experience.
After the procedure
Once the root canal treatment is done, the teeth will be restored. Indeed, we want to ensure it retains its original function and appearance, to minimize the treatment’s impact on your everyday life.
Once the restoration is completed, a second appointment will be planned to evaluate the procedure results. Also, this second appointment allows to rule out any possible complications, on the off-chance they might arise.
